While acute stroke is a case for the emergency departments, according to the internationally well-known saying “Time Is Brain”, secondary care after a stroke is of equal importance. 5-10% of patients who suffer a stroke will experience a 2nd stroke within 12 months of the first event. Therefore, the importance of early detection and treatment of a tendency to stroke (medical term stroke risk factors) must be emphasized. In addition to regular physical examinations, we offer ultrasound examinations of the vessels supplying the brain (Doppler and the color-coded duplex). In addition, we cooperate interdisciplinary with cardiological and laboratory colleagues in order to be able to offer a thorough check-up.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system and the most common non-traumatic cause of disability in young adulthood. The diagnosis is made on the basis of anamnesis, clinical neurological examination, MRI imaging and findings from the cerebrospinal fluid (cerebrospinal fluid). In addition, the evoked potentials can support such a diagnosis with their additional information. The treatment of an acute MS exacerbation is primarily through intravenous cortisone therapy. After the exacerbation treatment, an immunomodulatory therapy can be initiated as MS prophylaxis. Immunotherapy initiated early reduces the rate of relapses and in many cases the progression of disability, particularly the risk of cognitive decline in highly active disease. Here, too, we accompany the patient for the entire spectrum of diagnostics and therapy.

Evaluation of Dementia
The autonomic nervous system is particularly affected in some diseases, so that the exact clarification of such an involvement of the autonomic nervous system is of great importance.
Up to 70% of MS sufferers show cognitive deficits when tested with appropriate test methods. The tests that are suitable for developing dementia (such as DemTect, Minimentalstatus and MoCa) are not used here because they do not have adequate sensitivity for detecting MS-related cognitive decline. However, we use internationally recognized test batteries specifically designed for this purpose.
